Engine Oil

Perhaps you have heard stories from friends or family members about a vehicle they owned and loved that seemed to go on forever with very little need for repair. These kinds of stories, once rare, are now more numerous. Vehicles, like the one you drive, have been engineered and built to last a lot longer and owners are reaping substantial value from the investment they’ve made.

While engineering and manufacturing expertise have improved vehicle quality and durability, we cannot rely solely on these factors to keep the vehicle operating optimally.

Engine oil

Time and experience have proven that careful attention to changing engine oil is chief among the things we can do to get lots of miles and use out of any vehicle.

Function

First of all, engine oil lubricates. Reducing friction between very tight fitting parts prevents wear and extends engine life. Two additional advantages to reduced friction are improved performance and fuel mileage. Keeping the oil fresh ensures that friction reducing agents remain strong.

Detergent in engine oil doesn’t really clean. Detergent additives bond to metal surfaces and prevent dirt from sticking while dispersants keep dirt particles from combining preventing sludge and making it possible for the dirt to be filtered.

Pistons

Over time additives lose their effectiveness and must be replenished.

Modern Systems

Today’s vehicles are equipped with oil monitoring systems that provide drivers feedback regarding remaining oil life. These systems have been tested for many years and have proven very reliable. The system normally indicates the percentage of oil life remaining.

Oil Life

Most manufactures recommend replacement once the percentage has dropped below 20% of useful life.

Factors and Effect

Oil life systems have made it possible to increase the time and mileage between changes. This can reduce the cost of ownership while maximizing the performance and life of the engine.

If you watch your oil life system you will notice that the percentage will drop faster in the winter than in warmer weather. This is because cold weather driving is toughest on the oil and the system is designed to compensate accordingly. The same is true for stop and go driving which is worse for oil life than sustained higher speeds.

Caution sign

1. Oil life systems do not measure oil level, so be sure to check the oil level at every fill up, or stop in and let us check and top it off for you free of charge.

2. When the oil is changed be sure the oil life monitoring system is reset.
